Why Is My Google Ranking Not Improving?

By Jim Pretin

Google is by far the most important search engine on the net. To rise to the top of their search engine, you need to improve your link popularity and you need to understand how they measure your link popularity (over 50% of all search engine traffic comes from Google, and if you can rise to the top, you will likely rise to the top of all the other search engines as well).

Link popularity is defined as the number of sites that are linking to your site. Some websites have thousands or even millions of sites linking to them, while others might have only a few. The search engines use the number of inbound links your site has as a measure of how important your site is, which translates into your search engine ranking.

The actual number of links to your site is not the only variable used to calculate your link popularity. The search engines also examine the relevance of the links to the subject matter of your site. For example, if a website that sells vitamins has 4,000 inbound links, but the source of most of the links are websites that have nothing to do with vitamins, then the algorithm that search engines use to determine link popularity will take that into account, and the link popularity score will not be very good.

It is possible for a website with a relatively small number of quality inbound links to be ranked higher than a site with a bunch of irrelevant or insignificant links. If I have a website that offers quotes for auto insurance, and I have 800 quality inbound links, then I might receive a much higher search engine ranking than another mortgage site that has 3,000 links that stem from link farms or Free For All (FFA) pages.

If you try to acquire inbound by using link farms or FFA pages, not only will it hurt your search engine ranking, but you might get permanently removed from the search engine listings. Links farms are sites where you can instantly exchange links with all the sites listed in that directory. FFA pages are pointless link directories. The search engines usually discount any links that come from either of these sources.

Now that we understand what link popularity is and how it works, we need to look specifically at how Google measures it. They use a number of variables in their algorithm to calculate your overall link score. The higher your score, the higher you will be ranked in the search listings.

One factor that Google uses in their algorithm, obviously, is the total number of sites linking to you. The more links you have, the higher your score will be. However, their algorithm is a little more complicated than that, and it is possible for a website with fewer links to be ranked higher than a website that has more links.

The reason for this is because Google also measures the quality of your links. If your website is about vitamins, and the site linking to you is a video game site, then that is not considered a quality link. The link still helps your score, but the link would help your score much more if it were from a website whose subject matter is the same as yours.

Also, Google gives a higher score to a link if it comes from a page that has actual content that relates to your keywords. For example, if your site is about jewelry, and another jewelry website has posted a link to your site on their links page, that link is not as valuable as a link to your site coming from a blog or a message board where a lot of information about jewelry is being written or discussed.

Also, they give an even higher score to a link if it contains anchor text that matches one of the keywords that describes your site. For example, if I have a site that sells lawnmowers, and a blog about lawnmowers has posted a link to my site, it helps my score even more if the link text (also known as anchor text) is LAWNMOWERS. To learn more about anchor text, go to a search engine and look up ANCHOR TEXT and you will be able to learn about it.

Another factor used by Google to score your link popularity is the diversity of keywords contained on sites linking to you. For example, if you have a site that sells handbags, and all the links to your site are from other sites that contain nothing but the keyword HANDBAGS, Google considers that to be abnormal. To get a higher score, you need to have links coming from sites that contain a variety of keywords related to handbags, such as BUY HANDBAGS, LEATHER HANDBAGS, etc.

It is difficult to increase your link popularity, but now that you understand how your score is calculated, you can devise a plan to improve your score. You might want to consider posting to forums and blogs that contain information that is related to your site, and when you post, include a link to your site.

The Market Boosting Power of Search Engines

By Cynthia Mosher

You”ll always have bigger and better competitors, but that doesn”t mean you can”t succeed. You can always offer something ‘’slightly” different or a ”radical new alternative” if you insist. However, to deliver your message to the maximum number of people out there, to effectively compete with the competition, you first need to get your website ranking higher on the search engines. In fact being on the first three slots will guarantee you steady traffic to your Internet business.

Ever since the creation of Google in 1998, getting ranked high in Google’’s search engine has become a major concern for web site owners, a goal to be achieved that marks success. Recent statistics show that 80 percent of Internet users use Google to search for something whether it is information or a product. However, no one can say for sure the exact criteria that Google uses to determine its rankings. It is rumored that over 100 criteria are used to determine the algorithm which ranks your site’’s credibility with its search engines. Of course, some of these criteria are secret, but there are some known methods to achieve higher rankings.

The first thing of importance is your website content. Quality content in an easy-to-use site is perhaps one of the most important things you can do. “Content” refers to the words, articles, documents - generally all text information on your site. Search engines do not regard graphics themselves as content. Although flashy graphics will impress your visitors, they won”t help you in getting high ranks with search engines beyond the alt text that you place in the coding of your page for the graphics. Search engines use programs called spiders to research the content on your website. These spider programs in general won”t be able to decipher the information in your flashy graphics. If your page is graphic heavy you may even end up on the lower scale of the results.

Another thing that you have to employ is keywords. Having a website with only the prices and the names of the products will not get you very far with the search engines. You need key words on your pages that tell the search engine what you content is about. Also make sure to update your content frequently and with quality content as this will help you get a better ranking on the search engines.

A common mistake web owners make is in spelling and grammar. This will put off potential customers as a result of appearing unprofessional. As well, it has also been found that more than three spelling mistakes can cause you to lose your ranking with the search engines.

Another essential key to ranking is getting links back to your website from other websites on the internet, particularly sites with good page rank status. This lends heavily to your site’’s credibility in the eyes of Google and others.

Reaching and keeping your website high on the search engines” top lists will be an ongoing endeavor. With well written content, filled with niche-rich keywords, and pages low on graphics and high in quality information plus back links for authority-delivered traffic, you can climb the ranks quickly and consistently with a little work and a lot of results.

Three Ways to Build Traffic Without Going Broke

By Katryna Johnson

As a website owner, you have probably already figured out that getting people to actually visit your website is the single hardest task there is. Creating the product, builidng the website, submitting the site to search engines — these tasks all pale in comparison to the daunting task of getting people to find YOU in the midst of everything else. How do you get them to find you?

Let’’s face it. You may have a dynamite website and a killer offer, but if no one sees it, no one will buy it. If you”ve done your homework on web marketing, then you”ve seen the same mantra over and over. Start with free traffic. Free Traffic. Free Traffic. Clicks and orders will be pouring in. Just get some free traffic. But you go to these traffic-generating sites and you have, what, 30 characters for a title and maybe another 70 characters for a description. Those need to be some mighty powerful 100 characters to break through the clutter and noise of these traffic-generating sites.

The hard truth is that you get what you pay for. Some of the free traffic sites are good for testing ad copy. Some are better than others at getting your ad shown to some people. But unless your service is really unique, everyone who is clicking on your free traffic link is surfing for credits just like you. Sure, you get lucky occasionally, but it’’s not a tactic that will bring you instant fortune. It takes a long time to build up enough credits to make the free traffic sites work. And buying traffic from these sites is not usually the most cost-effective way to spend your limited advertising dollar.

What you really want is potential customers, not just traffic. So, what’’s a new website owner to do? Start with the basics.

1. Start promoting your website to offline contacts. Create a business card or flyer with a product description and your web address. Before you hand the card or flyer to anyone, ask for their email address and for permission to email them a newsletter. If you have offline customers, tell them about your website on their invoices, your correspondence footer, on the cash register receipt. These customers already know you and are more likely to check out your site. They are also more likely to want your services.

2. Start your own email newsletter and email it to your current customers and business contacts who you feel may have an interest in your product or services. Fill your email with information and plenty of links back to your services. In your newsletter, ask them, and I mean SPECIFICALLY ask them to forward it to everyone they know who might be interested in your product. If you have provided good information, some of your contacts are sure to pass it along. In addition, ask those who forwarded your information to give you the contact information so you can follow up, too.

3. Submit your newly created newsletter to ezine and newsletter directories. The process is fairly straightforward, but you will have to place a link to the directory on your website. That’’s OK! In fact, it’’s a great thing. One of the criteria the search engines look for in ranking your site is the number of links. So link away.

And then in a couple weeks, write another newsletter and submit it to the newsletter directories. Just using these few strategies can build a reputation for your site that will allow you to attract the customers you want.

Try it. It works.

If You Go With a VOIP Phone, Consider This

By Terry Fitzroy

It’’s not easy to find the right VOIP service provider. Often times people get themselves into situations that they don”t want to be in because they didn”t take the time to choose their service provider wisely. Here you”ll find several things that you should consider before choosing which VOIP service provider you will go with for your service.

One of the first questions you should ask your VOIP is about the cost, and make sure that you tell them to give you all of the costs. If you”ve seen a really good price advertised, be careful. Many times, a service provider will hide all of the additional costs behind a deceiving advertising number. So when asking questions make sure that you get all of the details.

One question you should ask is “will there be any further costs after the setup and equipment?” This question is where many customers fail. Next, ask them if you will need anything other than what they have proposed to you. You need to make sure that you”ll be receiving all of the necessary equipment with your initial purchase.

I”ve often seen cases where the provider did not mention that after the initial purchase the buyer still had to go and make further purchases elsewhere. Next, ask them if it is necessary for you to buy the phones themselves, or if you need to rent them. And lastly, make sure you find out the difference between local and international rates, and differences in pricing from region to region.

You should comb through the contract with care, and give attention to the policy on termination. You may not know now, but it is very common for service providers to sneak a cancellation fee into the contract. What if you don”t like the service? Make sure that you know whether or not you”ll need to pay a hefty fee to terminate your contract just in case.
In most cases, companies will demand a minimum of one year for any contract.

Find this out before signing kind of agreement.
Also, the time may come when you need to call the company for technical support in the event that your phone malfunctions, or breaks.

Basically, you should just make sure to ask them if they will provide you with a telephone number or a website for you to contact someone in the even that this should happen to you. Technical support can come in handy, but if you don”t have any to help, you may find yourself up the creek without a paddle. If possible, getting your problem solved in person is much better than having to go online to a website, or even calling to sort it out over the phone, so a local support option is the best.

If you plan to use VOIP in your business, you should check as to whether you have analog phones or not. They work just as well with an IP phone, but it will most likely depend upon the service you go with. This can save you money if you use your analog phones instead of new IP Phones. Considering that one new VOIP Phone can cost more than a hundred dollars. So when choosing a service, check with them on the possibility of using your regular phones before buying new ones.

What Are Mass Blog Generators

By Dan Ionescu

Before we start talking about blog generators scripts you must understand what blogs and blogging and blog marketing are. A blog also called weblog is a website where entries are written in chronological order and commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. They were originally created to be online diaries.

Blogging means the actions of creating and maintain a blog. Blogging combined the personal web page with tools to make linking to other pages easier -specifically permalinks, blogrolls and TrackBacks. Before blogging became popular, digital communities took many forms, including Usenet, commercial online services such as GEnie, BiX and the early CompuServe, e-mail lists and Bulletin Board Systems (BBS), which were harder to use.

Blogging become very popular because they are easy to use and they fit multiple purposes.
The blogs were used by:
- adolescents to write their thoughts and communicate with friends
- journalists to publish their articles and comments the latest news
- people with the same occupation to keep up to date with information
- people who shared the same hobbies to exchange impressions
- business for communications with employees and with customers
- online marketers to advertise their products. Blogs were achieving a better search engine position than normal sites so they were used to promote small business.

Because the weblogs were so loved by search engines, smart marketers use them to create info business. The marketers have created niche blogs, fill them with content, put Adsense, Chitika and affiliate program offers and so they made a nice online income.
The bad part with this system is that you must create the content before making money. Creating content for a blog was a time consuming task so automated blog software generators hit the market. Weblog software (also called blog software or blogware) is a category of software which consists of a specialized form of content management systems specifically designed for creating and maintaining weblogs.

The mass blog generators make all the content for you, most of them use RSS feed for this purpose. All you have to do is to put your Adsense, Chitika code on the freshly created pages and you are in business.

A good mass blog generator must:
- create 100 blogs per second
- do it all for you: creating, updating and pinging
- make your site get indexed fast
- provide thousands and thousands of one way links so your promotion to be on autopilot
- have a easy to manage admin zone

So you can use mass generator tools to create fully automatically blogs.

Buy Links or Buy Trouble?

By Andy West

The big debate raging on the Internet these days focuses on Google’’s recent campaign to ensure that paid links aren”t part of the determination of popularity of a website. Their take is that if you buy links, you”re trying to skew the results of any search in order to increase your presence in the rankings. But wait, isn”t that what any successful company wants to do? Increase their presence and popularity?

Taking a closer look at what Google’’s official stance is, you”ll find that Google doesn”t condemn outright companies who sell or buy links. In fact, they state on their website that, “Buying and selling links is a normal part of the economy of the web when done for advertising purposes, and not for manipulation of search results.” And here is where Google’’s new campaign runs into trouble. How does one decide what links are for “advertising purposes” vs. “manipulation of search results?”

It is inherent that any article, review or informational posting a company has on their website will have words and phrases that will register in search results. The information wouldn”t be relevant to the reader if it weren”t also relevant in searches, and vice-versa. The same can be said for articles and reviews that are on other sites but link back to a particular company’’s own website. The dilemma for Google is that there is really no way of knowing when and if a link was paid for.

The fact is that the Google algorithm can”t distinguish between a paid link and an equity link. Consultants often provide links to companies they are doing or have done work for. Authors link to bookstores carrying their latest work, and software firms link to client companies. These aren”t paid links, but they sure do increase the rankings for sites that, quite frankly, improve the bottom line for them personally.

The next blog you visit may have a few relevant articles on great ways to raise an all-natural garden. If the blog is associated with a site that sells all-natural fertilizers and pesticides, it’’s only natural that these articles will provide needed and valued information. If these sites link to other sites that have books about natural gardening, how can Google determine whether these are paid links or natural?

The simple answer is, it isn”t possible. These links could be because the writer of the articles actually uses and endorses the products mentioned in the links or the book publisher and the gardening supplies house have a reciprocal agreement. Other reasons could be because the book publisher paid for a link, the owner of the publishing house received a free load of fertilizer to try out (in hopes of being mentioned in a future book); he liked it; he thanked them with a link, or even the gardening supplies company is owned by a man whose sister is a sales associate for the book publisher.

But the results are the same. The links are relevant, regardless of whether they were paid for in cash, as a favor, in trade or in sweat equity. It’’s this vary blurring of the lines that makes it so practical and helpful to buy links. The more relevant information you provide to consumers, the more valuable you become. If a link is relevant, helpful and trustworthy, it should and will increase the ranking of the site it’’s on.

Google has asked that Internet users report sites that have paid links. It’’s a laughable suggestion. How does anyone else on the Internet know whether you have paid for a link or not? They can”t. And this is why, although some people may temporarily “go underground” with purchased links, the practice isn”t going to stop. It’’s a good thing, because these links increase competition and encourage growth and change, two very important aspects of a dynamic marketplace. Whether you buy a link or receive it unsolicited, it’’s going to be useful and relevant. If it weren”t, the link wouldn”t show up in Google’’s algorithm anyway.

Finally, Google suggests that those who buy links are “buying page rank.” Page rank isn”t for sale, particularly since it is owned by Google. The algorithm removes or penalizes non-relevant information in search results. If the information is relevant, it will improve rankings. To that end, it doesn”t matter at all whether that link was paid for in cash or trade.
