A website is a compilation of information on a particular subject or topic. Thus designing a website is basically to arrange and create the web pages that make up the website. A website may be compared to a book, with the pages being the web pages. Each webmaster has some information on the subject matter.

All the web pages together provide the complete information package for the visitors of the website.

Web designing is the process to create a website. A website provides information to an end user who requests for the information. Technology like HTML, XML and XHTML are used to provide text, forms and images in GIF, JPEG, PNG etc formats. More complex media can also be displayed if necessary. These may include vector graphics, animations, videos and sounds. Plug-in software is needed to run these media. Such software includes Flash, Java, and Quick Time. 1) The information content: This deals with the information material that should be on the site and how this should be arranged to provide intended message.

2) The Usability: The site has to be friendly to the visitor, in terms of navigation and ease of use.

3) The Look: The web pages must be designed so that one single style of message presentation should be prevalent throughout. The style has to be thoroughly professional with relevant materials in appealing presentation.

4) The Visibility: The site must be easy to find through major search engines and advertisements.

The first web page is known as the Home page. This usually has a welcome message, a language/region selection system, disclaimer etc. Each web page is an HTML file. Each web page has its own URL. All the web pages are linked together via a navigation menu. This menu has hyperlinks that link all the pages together. Web site design requires interlocking of multiple disciplines.

Information systems, information technology and communication design all play their individual roles. The components of a website are front-end and back-end. The front end is the content that the people can view and the back end has the source code, invisible scripts and components from the server side that process the front-end output.

A webmaster is a multiple skilled individual who can design a complete web site. Depending on the size of the project, a single web master can complete a site, or a project manager may be needed to oversee a group of designers.

After completion, a website must be uploaded to the server so that the general public can view its contents. The webmaster duty is to ensure more hits (also called web traffic) to the web site. This may be achieved through submission of the site to search engines like Yahoo, Google and MSN. Other ways include link exchanges with other sites, having affiliations with related websites.

I think almost anyone has a website these days, have it be a wordpress type site for personal blogs, or a more professional site for your business. When I”m doing a personal website I don”t really care all that much about the template that I use. But if it’’s going to be a business website and I want it to look professional and impressive, I will almost always spend a certain amount of money and a certain amount of time searching for the perfect template. I”m not talking about Myspace layouts, I”m talking about professionally done templates. Free templates just don”t have the same feel as a paid template.

So where can you get these templates from? Well just about anywhere depending on the type of template you want. There are different sites that offer different ones. Maybe you want a simple template design but you want a flash intro, or maybe you want a photography type template to show off all your photos, or maybe you want a regular template that just has a professional feel to it. You can have all this and more. Usually the sites that offer quality templates don”t charge per template. You as the buyer will buy a membership. And with this membership you can either receive “credits” to download templates or with your membership you receive templates with other things such as flash buttons, photos, backgrounds, logo templates, etc. Obviously a paid membership is the way to go. Even if its $40 or $50 you get all these extras included, so it’’s well worth it in the end.

Since most of these sites have designers working on them, they also offer something called “Customized Design Solutions” or “Customized Web Templates.” These are a little more expensive but, they give you all kinds of customization choices that maybe you wouldn”t get with the other templates on the site. In case you were wondering, here are a few customized options that you can choose for your template:

- Change the templates colors

- Change the templates background

- Replace the original logo with one you supply (this is really great if you have an official logo for your business!)

- Rearranging the content on your template

- Customizing the navigation menu or bar

The prices for this service as said above are a little bit more. But again you”re getting full on customized work, and if you don”t know how to do something like this yourself, this is a great way to get it done quickly. I know when I bought my flash photography template, I had no idea what I was doing! Maybe if it was regular html I could have figured something out, but flash? Forget it. So I left it to the professionals and now my site is absolutely incredibly!

How To Organize Your WebPages

Imagine you walked into a supermarket for you monthly shopping and you started by looking for brown bread. After a few minutes of craning your neck you saw a rack of white bread. Expectantly you approach it. But all there is, is white bread. You ask the attendant if they have any brown bread and they refer you to aisle seven on the other end of the supermarket. After crossing the floor to the other end you finally find your brown bread.

Incidentally next to the brown bread there is jam which reminds you that you need butter. But all that is in the vicinity are different brands of jams. On asking the attendant where you can get butter they explain, brown bread is together with jam, margarine is with white bread at aisle four , while butter is on second floor together with pasta. You ask why they arrange things so haphazardly and she explains with an irritating sense of pride that products are arranged according to how they are used together.

By this time you simply continue to shop because you have already started. And as you exasperatedly go looking for the next product in your shopping list you swear never to return. And as absurd as this scenario is, many websites have similar page to page linking.

Your website is like the supermarket floor space. Your different pages like products on the shelves and the linking structure is like the aisles. Like a well organized supermarket, you expect to find all your breads in one area as well as all your spreads in one area. Poor linking structure or what is referred to as a geeky linking will quickly frustrate your visitors and confuse SE spiders. And unlike in the supermarket where the shopper may continue shopping, hissing under the breath, online all it takes to exit is a click on the back button.

Incidentally, SEs tend to downgrade your ranking on the account of such poor structures. Test are showing that sites with poor page to page linking do poorly in SERP compared to those with good linking. But what is good linking? The arrangement of breads together with the spreads commonly used with the kind of bread seems reasonable. Unfortunately that is not how people generally shop. They prefer to get all the breads and choose, then all the spreads and choose. Arranging your web content in the same way in internet marketing and SEO is akin to being relevant. For example, a tourism website should have all content on hotel bookings together while that on game drives should be together but separate from hotel bookings. Yet these two categories of content should not link to each other directly. Technically this is referred to as siloing.

How To Make A One Hour Mini Site

For those who need to post a unique landing page, micro website or a quick promotional page this article was written especially for you and you should find it very useful too.

Making a one hour mini site is a very easy thing to do. I once made a mini site in the back or a cab in a traffic jam. I also made one on a quick flight from Malaysia to Phuket, Thailand. Both times it was about an hour so it can be done even if you are a novice on Photoshop like me.

Here is what you need:
One quality hour of your time
Photoshop
Microsoft FrontPage
And some free mini site templates

To get started you will need to find some free mini site templates that you like. You will want to save the header and footer graphic to a folder you can remember. I use “myminisite” as a folder name but, you can use whatever you like.

You first need to change the large text in the header graphic. You can play around with different fonts and background colors as well. If the header has a background photo I do not recommend changing it at this time. It Is better to find a header you like and work with it then changing too many things on the header. It can become a lot of work to change too many items and it will show down the process.

Next you will need to change the small text in the header graphic using the text tool. There is also a hand tool in Photoshop that will allow you to move around the text to get everything the way you like it and centered in the graphic. Once you get everything the way you like it you should now save your work and your mini site header is now finished.

Working with the footer graphic is pretty much the same as the header graphic. You will want to change the text in the footer to match the header. The footer is usually a smaller graphic so you will want to use the same font style but maybe a smaller size of font. It is best to pick a font that looks good with the graphic and not worry about the size too much.

The secondary text should be a good closing to your mini site theme. I like to use this line as sort of a site summery of everything they just read summed up in about 7 words. Ehen this is finished your footer graphic should be complete and you should now save this should be also.

Both the header and footer graphic should be saved as .gif files and when you save them you can save them in the “Save for web” option of Photoshop. This option will allow you to make the graphic smaller in file size without taking away from the actual picture size. It does this by making the graphic have less pixels in the image so you do lose some quality from the original graphic. By doing this it will allow your mini site to load faster and this in important when you have along page vertically or a mini site with a lot of pictures and or graphics.

Now your header and footer are web optimized for quick loading times and it is a good time to put them back into you main web template and start your mini page template. You can easily add your web copy to your template and add your final touches and graphics. It is important to use headline fonts and strong headlines in your mini site. You want to make it so it can be easily scanned by a reader who doesn”t have a lot of time to spend reading your site.

After you have made your headline strong, added bold text, underlined important text and maybe even highlighted a few things in yellow, you add your final graphics, pictures and whatever else you need to add you will now want to save your mini site and graphics to a folder for uploading. It’’s a good practice to check all your work in the preview tab in FrontPage to make sure you don”t miss anything before you upload all your work.

If your mini site looks good and everything checked out ok it is now time to upload your work to your hosting server. I like to upload from my desktop using windows explorer. You can use a FTP program also so it is really up to you here. I like the ease of using my desktop but a FTP program can be much quicker if you are uploading large files.

After your work is published on your server it is wise to really go back and check your work and all the hyperlinks. You want to make sure you put alt text in your photos. This is also a great place to add a few extra relevant keywords to your site. You new mini site is now finished and you should still have time left over. Use mini sites today and get your new web page idea posted within the next hour.

The aim of a website’’s navigation is simply to allow users to get to the content they require. For sites that have a large number of sections and web pages (and information sites can be one of these) the navigation plan has to be properly researched and designed.

You have to consider different types of visitors and simulate the most common steps they would take to find what they want on your site, and the navigation plan has to optimize this movement. For example, the steps required from searching a catalog of items, selecting from the catalog, adding them to a shopping cart, proceeding to check out, to entering the payment particulars is a specific sequence that should be facilitated by the navigation system.

If the sequence is haphazard, it could lead to frustration or the user may miss an important step and you would have an aborted sale. To find their way about, users need to know two things: - Where they are now - How to go elsewhere Navigation does not exist in isolation; good site organization is a prerequisite for a coherent navigation system.

A navigation system can be broken into two primary objective types: Location Indicators and Navigation Controls.

Location Indicators - Location indicators let users know where they are in the site at the moment. You need to keep in mind that users coming from outside your site can enter at any page, not necessarily on a main page. They need to be able to orientate themselves quickly.

Using ”breadcrumbs” on every page is a good idea. Breadcrumbs show you a series of hierarchical links that you have used to go from page to page within a section. Using breadcrumbs is like leaving a trail of the path you have followed. The breadcrumbs appear at the top of the content section, just below the main navigation template.

Each element in the breadcrumb is a link to that section or subsection. This helps in avoiding a series of back buttons allowing the user to directly go back to the main section page or another sub section. More importantly, it always shows the context of the page that is being viewed and how it belongs to a section or sub-section.

Navigation Controls - Navigation controls are the main navigation links. They allow users to move around the site. Whether they comprise images or text they should be predictably located in the same place, and with the same appearance, on each page.

These have several purposes: To allow users to move about within the site; To tell users what information is available at the link; To work with location indicators to orientate users; A good navigation control is clear and looks like navigation; Leads to obvious content - users have a good idea what they will find if they click; Is consistent with other navigation controls; Is predictable in its style and location on the page.

There is no mystery to usability. It simply involves creating a site, which is accessible to the majority of people, is easy to use and get around and delivers on its promises. You can have a site that meets the most important standards of usability by planning it well and always keeping the end user in mind. Remember that websites should not be designed for their owners - they should be designed for their users.

Problems with usability could be said to stem from just two sources: the site itself and the user. In fact, the site is always at fault if a visitor (however experienced or inexperienced) has problems navigating, getting information or understanding the site.

However, saving in GIF format will often compromise the appearance of your image, so make your choice wisely!
