If You Build It Will They Really Come?

By Kristi Ambrose

It doesn”t really matter what kind of a business you have or how cool, useful or innovative your product is, you can”t just get people to your site and expect them to buy it in a quick minute, it’’s not how it works. There is a little something called a sales process. As quoted on Wiki here is the definition of this process; “A sales process is a systematic approach for performing product or service sales. The reasons for having a sales process include seller and buyer risk management, standardized customer interaction in sales, and scalable revenue generation.”

This process must be addressed from start to end in order to receive any potential sales. Each section of the operation can make or break that prospect’’s interest and unless you understand where it’’s broken, you are going to have NO Gross Sales! There must be a natural flow that works. Kind of like a great motion picture, one scene leads to the next until the big finale, in our case a sale! The first thing you want to do is go through the process of going through your site like you are a prospective customer. Does your site have a point? Is it too busy or do you not give enough information? Does your site look inviting and not like that of a sales letter? Is your site optimized? User-friendly? Easy to navigate? These are the things you should be looking at while viewing this exercise. If it doesn”t make sense to you, how is it ever going to make sense to someone else?!?

Remember, a great website, doesn”t make a sale. A great sales process makes a great sale! It’’s always important to test out different aspects of your site, try a new landing page, try to word your content differently, use different copy, etc. The main point in getting sales from your site is to constantly be checking it for “breaks” in the chain. When you can master your sales process your profits and results will increase and allow you to focus on other aspects of your business! If you absolutely feel that you can”t do this unbiasedly, get a colleague to do it for you or get a friend, someone that you trust, to do it for you. Leads are an absolutely essential part of building and flourishing your business, therefore, you are going to need to take whatever steps necessary to generate them even if it means “fixing” your not so perfect website. Fixing your site isin”t a sign of failure, it’’s a sign of success and of wanting to make things work. Swallow your pride, it could lead to some really incredible things.
